  15. This is a reading list involving the Arthurian legend.  For its
  16. original inception, I would like to thank the readers of the Camelot
  17. mailing list (address is listed in Organizations).  I wrote a good
  18. many of the original reviews when I was a member, but since then a
  19. number of people have submitted additional references for inclusion
  20. into this list.
  21.  
  22. My criterion for these books is that it be concerned with the Arthur
  23. legend in some way.  I have several categories:
  24.  
  25.   * Fiction: novelizations of the Camelot legend, or novels that use
  26.     elements of the legend.
  27.  
  28.   * Poetry: poetic renditions of the legend.
  29.  
  30.   * Non-Fiction and research: includes research into the origin of the
  31.     legends, speculation on who the original characters might have
  32.     been, studies and critiques of medieval sources, literary
  33.     criticism, etc.
  34.  
  35.   * Medieval and Early Texts: original or modern translations of texts
  36.     written before 16th century or so (an arbitrary divison point I
  37.     used).
  38.  
  39.   * Magazines and Articles: references that appear in magazines and
  40.     articles.  These are typically research notes.
  41.  
  42.   * Arthurian references: novelizations that use the legend in a minor
  43.     way or as secondary characters.
  44.  
  45.   * Celtic Fiction: reworkings (novelizations) of traditional Celtic
  46.     stories.  I suppose I could have a category for research into
  47.     celtic fiction, but the ones I consider relevant are in the
  48.     non-fiction and research section above.
  49.  
  50.   * Organizations: finally, I provide a list of organizations dealing
  51.     with the Camelot legend.  This is not exhaustive; in fact,
  52.     it's rather incomplete and I would love more information.
  53.  
  54. In general, related stories are acceptable (such as Tristam and
  55. Iseult).  Out-of-time stories are acceptable as long as they still
  56. center on the Arthur myth (Kennealy's _Hawk's Gray Feather_) or are
  57. talking about his return (_Sir Machinery_ and others).  References to
  58. Arthurian elements are also acceptable, but I do not put all of them
  59. in (a complete listing would be very large!); only the ones that seem
  60. interesting.  The Celtic works are included, because many of them
  61. apparently provide an early genesis for the Arthurian stories, and
  62. others are stories derived from minor characters in the Arthurian
  63. stories (or perhaps the other way around, characters from well known
  64. stories got honorable mention in these later stories --- who can
  65. tell?).

  118. Man_, _Neighbors_, and a number of other books.  This retelling of the
  119. Arthur legend is somewhat reminiscent of the movie "Excalibur" in

  122. Borowsky, Marvin, _The Queen's Knight_ (Random House, New York, 1955
  123. - probably out of print).  An interesting Arthur, who begins as a
  124. middle-aged bumpkin, crowned to be a puppet to a group of regents.
  125. All in all, this novel is somewhat uneven but quite readable.

  128. Books, New York, 1982.  ISBN 0-345-35049-9.  Hardcover and trade
  129. paperback.)  A female oriented and positive rendition of the Arthurian
  130. legend.  Considerably more sympathetic to pagan religions (although
  131. depicted as modern neopaganism) than to Christianity.

  133. Bradshaw, Gillian, _Hawk of May, _Kingdom of Summer, _In Winter's
  134. Shadow_ (Menthuen Paperbacks, Great Britain also Signet Books, 1980
  135. also hardcover by Simon and Schuster.)  The story of Gwalchmai, one of
  136. Arthur's Knights.  He is god-touched with fighting madness and is one
  137. of the brothers of Medraut (Mordred). _Down the Long Wind_ is the single
  138. book volume version of the three books.

  171. about Arthur's return in modern day.

  207. _Artorius Rex_ is another Romano-Celtic tale which attempts a
  208. historical reconstruction.

  211. (Bantam Books).  The characters are terrific, the sense of time and
  212. place eye opening.  Arthur in the beginning is a native officer in the
  213. Roman legions guarding the northern borders.

  220. Windus, 1991.  ISBN 07011 3570 0.  A very exciting book which at
  221. best can be described as meta-fiction.  It takes on the whole
  222. problematic that the Arthurian/Tristam tradition presents.

  230. Arthurian legend in a bizarre mix of modern and ancient times.

  238. illustrated.  The insided cover says that a version of _Sir Gawain
  239. and the Green Knight_ is also available by the same author.

  241. Hawke, Simon [Nicholas Yermakov], _The Wizard of 4th Street (1987)_,
  242. _The Wizard of Whitechapel (1988)_, _The Wizard of Sunset Strip

  244. (1991)_, _The Wizard of Santa Fe (1991)_ (?).  Premise: There was a
  245. magical alien species which bred with humans long, long ago.  The
  246. descendants of these unions were humans with magical abilities.
  247. Merlin was a half-breed, as was Morgan LeFay.  Since magic and
  248. technology cannot co-exist, magic went dormant as technology
  249. increased.  After the fall of technology, magic returned and Merlin
  250. revived.  Unfortunately, the alien species discovered that Necromancy
  251. produces powerful magic and they are now known as demons.  Merlin has
  252. to recruit and train magical humans to thwart their plans.

  255. Humble, William F.  _A Tale of Arthur_ (Anthony Blond, London, 1967).

  257. Jones, Courtway, _In the Shadow of the Oak King_.  It apparently
  258. tries to tell the story in a historically 'realistic' setting (i.e.,
  259. without grafting the high middle ages onto sixth century Britain).

  261. Jones, Mary J., _Avalon_ (The Naiad Press, ISBN: 0-941483-96-7, 1991).
  262. This is set in the closing days of King Arthur's reign and mostly
  263. concerns the Lady of the Lake at that time (Argante, whom I don't
  264. believe appears in any legend; her predecessor is Nimue), with some
  265. recounting of her childhood.  Definitely a feminist reading, and not
  266. as well done as _Mist of Avalon_, for example.  It is also curiously
  267. incomplete.  More books may be planned.

  270. name and approximate year.

  272. Katz, Welwyn Wilton, _The Third Magic_ (Groundwood Books/Douglas &

  274. "young adult" book, this one has one of the more imaginative
  275. retellings of the Arthurian legend.

  278. Penguin Books), ISBN 0-451-45053-1, 1990). First in _The Tales of
  279. Arthur_, a series in which the later books have not yet been
  280. published.  Builds upon the world of _The Silver Branch_, _The Copper
  281. Crown_ and _The Throne of Scone_ in which the Sidhe were aliens.  This
  282. book is set much earlier.  A good fantasy/SF blend.

  342. breed: human and space alien, and the war between light and darkness
  343. is recast into a war between two space going races.  The premise is
  344. bizarre, but Norton makes it work well.

  346. Nye, Robert.  _Merlin_, 1975?  Humorous and baudy account of the life
  347. of the mage.

  372. Morgan the Fay. But never before have there been five tellings, each
  373. by a witness to the mythical events: Gwennol Far-Sight, Morgan's
  374. childhood nurse and a wise woman in the ways of sacred pagan magic.
  375. Luned, the young white nun, who fears her own soul has been contamined
  376. by Morgan's passions.  Teilo, who was once a proud and powerful Smith
  377. of the Old Religion, condemned to live as a woman amongst Morgan's

  386. says it all.  This is a retelling of the Arthurian tales.  Merlin is a
  387. two bit con artist/pimp, Gwen is a whore that enjoys giving out free
  388. samples, Arthur is Merlin's assistant.  It is a riot.  Seare is a pen
  389. name for a well known author as yet unrevealed.  Speculation centers
  390. on Rodney Whitaker (source William Poundstone, Biggest Secrets).

  392. Service, Pamela F., _Winter of Magic's Return_, _Tomorrow's Magic_
  393. (Atheneum, New York, 1987). Five hundred years after the Devastation
  394. destroys modern civilization, the young Merlin and two friends
  395. succeed in bringing back King Arthur to Britain in the grip of a
  396. nuclear winter and together they struggle to build a new and better
  397. society despite the evil plotting of Morgan Le Fay.  Juvenile fiction.

  419. glossaries of notable places, of special "things", and many other
  420. fascinating tidbits, such as an attempt at a self-consistent
  421. chronology of Arthur's reign, and so on.

  1118. rhymed verse, the other in alliterative.
